On the Onion Lake Cree Nation, the first day of school is being marked by the opening ceremony for a symbolic teepee monument Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. Families have donated metal tablespoons that will be hung from the monument, creating a giant wind chime. The monument is near the Four Directions intersection. Each spoon is engraved with a family name and a community virtue that will be practiced at home. The 31.5 foot metal monument was designed to increase parental engagement in the education system by celebrating identify and belonging with families in the community.
