Years ago, Saskatchewan used to have free dental care for children. The federal NDP is expanding on that idea and has announced as a campaign promise, free dental care for households making under $70-thousand, and a sliding scale of cost for those above that mark.
Saskatoon West candidate Sheri Benson says even with private insurance, too many families aren’t getting the coverage they need. She adds that many small businesses aren’t able to offer this type of health benefit right now because it’s too costly.
The plan is to recoup the cost through closing corporate tax loop holes, making sure everyone is paying their fair share and getting rid of tax havens. Benson says down the road, there will be savings through preventative care, meaning fewer emergency visits. Benson believes including dental care in the health care system will help millions of Canadians who aren’t getting the care they need.
