The Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 600 has voted 94 per cent in favour of job action, that could include a full withdrawal of services, affecting care and support to some of the province’s most vulnerable people. The local represents close to 385 social and central service works across the province. The union says the two main issues at the bargaining table are wages and hours of work. President Jacalyn Luterbach says, “Workload and caseload are increasing across the board and in every classification, and the current shift schedule in crisis and planned respite homes in unsustainable.” Employees at these facilities are working eight hour shifts, six days a week with two or less days off. The union says staff are often working two or three different shifts in a week. The local is not in a legal strike position and won’t be until essential service negotiations are complete. Those talks have not yet started.
