Another recycling opportunity may begin this spring, depending on how Saskatoon residents feel about it. Cosmo Industries is looking at a service where workers would collect the refundable containers at your door and would then give you a charitable donation tax receipt.
Refundable deposit containers include juice, soda and beer cans, plastic bottles and jugs, liquor and soda bottles, milk cartons and juice boxes. Cosmo’s manager of business development and community relations, Ken Gryschuk, says recycling revenue is down across the world, so this program called Cans4Cosmo could help with that.
It’s a program that is already running successfully in Calgary and Edmonton. It would also mean fewer glass bottles being broken and therefore another way to increase their revenue. Gryschuk explains that glass thrown into all the bins, and in particular the large multi-unit bins, most often gets broken and then is no longer refundable.
If these bottles were being picked up at your door, there is less chance they will break, so Cosmo Industries wants to know how many residents would be interested in this type of program. If 300 or more homes are interested, the program could begin this spring. To go to the short survey click here.
