The Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan has sent a 149-year-old portrait from its collection on long-term loan to the Waterford Art Gallery, in Waterford, Ireland.
The portrait is of Mary Palliser, the sister of explorer John Palliser, who helped survey Canada in the 1850s. It was painted in 1871. The portrait was donated to the Provincial Archives in 1994 by a descendent of a good friend of the Palliser family.
The Palliser family has its roots in Ireland and Mary Palliser is buried there.
