Originally there were seven sites proposed for Saskatoon Public Schools’ City Centre Project, then it came down to a decision between the existing Princess Alexandra site or a section of Optimist Park, and now a final choice has been made. The Saskatoon Board of Education has approved the Princess Alexandra School grounds for the new building which will converge the school communities of King George, Pleasant Hill and Princess Alexandra.
Board Chair, Colleen MacPherson, says they took into consideration what they heard through public engagement, the fact they already own the site and don’t have to go through the paperwork and requiring approval from City Council to build at Optimist Park, and that there are already existing services in the area around the school that support the community. Next, is the design phase to figure out what the school will look like and where it will be situated on the grounds.
MacPherson says at some point the old school will have to be torn down, and until the new building opens, students will be bused elsewhere.
It’s expected the City Centre Project will open in the fall of 2024, housing around 500 students.
