Once you are two weeks past your second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, if you are named as a close contact of someone who has tested positive for the virus, and you remain asymptomatic, you won’t have to isolate. Health Minister Paul Merriman says the level of protection provided by the two doses of vaccine is why the government can announce this new guideline.
If you have symptoms though, you will have to self-isolate and be tested. Anyone who is unvaccinated or has only had one vaccine, must still self-isolated if they are named as a close contact.
However, Merriman says Public Health has the discretion to require fully vaccinated close contacts to isolate if they are considered at higher risk of serious illness or for increased transmission, or they live in settings at risk of outbreaks. He suggests avoiding the disruption of having to isolate and miss out on work or recreational activities is another reason to get your shots.
Enhancing Access To First Doses
In order to remove all public health restrictions, the first dose vaccination threshold is 70 per cent of residents 12 and over, so to the province is stepping up access in particular for first doses. The Saskatchewan Health Authority has organized pop-up locations around the province which include malls, golf courses, parks and some larger workplaces. There will also be a fast pass lane at some clinics dedicated to those receiving their first vaccine.
The province says the vaccination rates for 12 to 39 year olds is low compared to those 40 and older, so the goal of this first dose initiative is to bring more opportunity to those who haven’t received their first shot yet.
Additional clinics are being considered for recreational areas and work-based locations. The list of clinics is available at www.saskatchewan.ca/covid19-vaccine and will be updated with dates and times as they become available, including new clinic locations as they are announced.
