Canada’s birthday is today but there won’t be a lot of celebrating with several communities for-going events in the wake of discoveries of unmarked graves being made at former residential schools including one on the Cowessess First Nation where as many as 751 graves were found. Premier Scott Moe says he knows there are a number of communities that have chosen to not have a Canada Day celebration or have chosen to delay the celebration and he says the choices are being made at a community level and he respects those decisions. Moe says he will be celebrating Canada Day at a low-key event near his Shellbrook home and he will take time out today to reflect on our history both the positive and the negative. Moe says we must educate ourselves on what Canada’s shared history is with Indigenous people and non-Indigenous people and understanding that we need to do better as we move forward. (CKRM)
