An Indigenous researcher hired by the Prince Albert Historical Society is hoping to highlight the untold stories of the six Indigenous groups that have lived in the area for generations.
Lindsay Sorell says her research will help to expand the Indigenous History Room at the Historical Museum and reclaiming their traditional stories.
She is putting together family genealogies, cross referencing archives with other museums, identifying people in old photographs and is hoping to go out and have conversations with community members and Elders, to hear the oral histories.
She notes that this way, she can rely on more than colonial documents.
Sorell says the goal is also for the Indigenous History Room to also be a place for healing with gatherings and ceremonies.
The work is scheduled to be complete by next March.
Sorell’s position was funded through an $80,000 grant to the Prince Albert Historical Society from the National Indian Brotherhood Trust Fund.
