With the hot dry conditions continuing fire crews are on standby ready to respond to wildfire at Prince Albert National Park.
There are currently no active wildfires in the park and during periods of increased ire danger the park is patrolled by helicopter to identify wildfire starts early. A fire ban was lifted two weeks ago but the need for a fire ban in the park is assessed daily and campers are urged to excise caution with their campfire keeping it small and under control, and never leave it unattended. A fire permit is required to have a campfire and are only permitted in supplied fire pits and campers are required to completely extinguish their fire with water.
There is a smoke advisory due to widespread smoke from wildfires in northern Saskatchewan is forecast and may be visible in Waskesiu. This may affect residents and visitors over the August Long Weekend.
In preparation for wildfire season mature spruce trees and underbrush were thinned near the Waskesiu Golf Course to reduce the risk of property damage from potential wildfires. Trees were pruned and undergrowth was removed around the Operations Building to maintain the effectiveness of the fuel break at Waskesiu. An annual spring prescribed fire along the south section of the fuel break is another key part of the maintenance strategy that burns off highly flammable dead grass and renews the fuel break before peak wildfire season.
