If you get a call from the Canadian Border Services Agency, it’s probably not what you think. The Saskatoon Police Service Economic Crime Section has received multiple reports recently of fraudsters claiming to represent the CBSA.
The callers inform their victims that a parcel or shipment headed to them was stopped at the border, and it contains illegal items. The fraudsters then tell the victims they have warrants for their arrest and try to convince them to send money to avoid legal consequences.
Police remind everyone that a government or law enforcement agency will not phone you demanding payment, including in crypto currency.
Before sending money to anyone based on a phone call, the Saskatoon Police Service advises to call friends and family to discuss what happened, and check with the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
