A convoy of transport truck drivers are driving across the country to protest the federal vaccine mandate for cross-border travel, something the U.S. government has also put in place. Supporters of the rally on Twitter say thousands of trucks are expected to converge on Ottawa. The truckers stopped in both Saskatoon and Regina Monday.
The Canadian Trucking Alliance, issued a statement on Saturday which says the vast majority of the trucking industry is vaccinated, with the overall industry rate similar to that of the general public. The CTA doesn’t support, and strongly disapproves, of any protests on public roadways, highways, and bridges, saying such actions, especially those that interfere with public safety, are not how disagreements with government policies should be expressed.
Regina Police sent out a news release saying the convoy is expected to make its way to the Regina area Monday evening. Police in the Queen City say they have been in contact with organizers of the convoy, who have been cooperative with authorities in sharing route information and anticipated numbers. It’s expected that hundreds of semis will be approaching the city from the north and west and will be using the bypass. Originally the plan was to have the convoy use Ring Road and Victoria Avenue, although discussion between police and organizers resulted in the decision to utilize the bypass. The convoy passed through Saskatoon this afternoon with a stop at the Flying J on Idylwyld Drive and Marquis Drive. Media reports said there were around 30 semis as of 2 p.m. in Saskatoon, although it wasn’t clear if they were all part of the event.
Conservative MP for Saskatoon-Grasswood, Kevin Waugh was among those who showed support for truckers during the stop in Saskatoon.
I supported our local truck drivers as they hit the road in Saskatoon today. It should have never come to this for them.
Safe travels and I will see all of you folks in Ottawa!#westandwithtruckers #ThankATrucker #freedomrally pic.twitter.com/CYJlz6dKnc— Kevin Waugh (@KevinWaugh_CPC) January 25, 2022
