The Mayor of Melville remembers Victoria Day long weekend of 2021 like it was yesterday. It was May 21st last year that an ice storm that swept through the Melville area, causing wide-spread power outages. Walter Streelasky recalls flashing lights from emergency vehicles, fallen trees and broken power lines.
At the time, SaskPower said approximately 56-thousand 987 customers in east and southeast Saskatchewan were affected by the ice storm. The Rail City spent between $1.2 and 1.3-million on the response and cleanup, and applied for funding through the Provincial Disaster Assistance Program (PDAP) not long after the storm, recovering approximately $835-thousand.
