The Saskatoon Governance and Priorities Committee has decided the City isn’t fully prepared to take on the responsibilities of decriminalizing illegal substances and right now the city doesn’t have enough infrastructure and supports needed to assist individuals who are dealing with drug addiction.
The Governance and Priorities Committee, which is made up of all city council members, met yesterday to discuss the potential of decriminalizing possession of small amounts of illegal drugs in Saskatoon.
This comes months after the Board reviewed a report compiled by University of Saskatchewan professors who recommended the City seek an exception for drug decriminalization. Although the Saskatchewan Government has already stated they won’t be following the same path as British Columbia which just decriminalized the possession of small amounts of hard drugs such as Meth and cocaine.
For now the Saskatoon Board of Police Commissioners will observe what happens in British Columbia over the coming months to see the effects of the decriminalization in that province.
