The Leader of Saskatchewan’s Official Opposition is calling on the government to scrap the proposed eight per cent utility rate hike to give citizens a much-needed break. Carla Beck says, We already have the highest power rates among the provinces, and the last thing the government should be doing is raising them 8 per cent during an affordability crisis.”
SaskPower Critic Aleanna Young says, “The Alberta government is already on its second round of affordability relief. Meanwhile, Scott Moe is raising taxes, raising power rates and driving away industry.” The NDP quotes the Saskatchewan Industrial Energy Consumer Association as stating the increase is “extremely aggressive” and “triggers concerns about competitiveness.” A news release from the NDP says the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers, the Canadian Federation of Independent Business and Paper Excellence are also against the proposed rate increase of four per cent this year and another four per cent next year.
