A few minutes before 5:30 a.m. this (sat) morning, the Saskatoon Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the 100 block of Avenue I South.
The building was vacant at the time of the fire. The roof started coming down about ten minutes after firefighters were called out and the duplex was searched on both sides to make sure there was no one inside. It was brought under control at 5:47 a.m.
No one was injured. The cause of the fire is suspicious. Fire officials say a rear door to one of the units was broken into and a fire started in a closet on the main floor living room. The blaze then extended from the closet into the attic and roof. The damage estimate is $150,000 and police will take over the investigation.
About five minutes after the call came in about a duplex on fire, crews were called out to a report of someone lighting a dumpster on fire in the back lane of the 1300 block of Avenue E North.
When firefighters arrived a dumpster was on fire and the heat from the flames damaged the exterior finishing of a detached garage. The fire has been deemed suspicious and damage to the garage is estimated at $1,000.
Anyone with information regarding either fire is asked to contact the Saskatoon Police Service or Crime Stoppers.
