A grass fire blocked one of the main highways in southeast Saskatchewan Wednesday and wind warnings continue for the area today (thurs). The large grass fire has been burning approximately 5 kilometers west of Weyburn.
Highway #13 is now open. Vehicles were being turned around yesterday, for safety reasons, to prevent motorists from traveling in the area where the fire is burning.
On the edge of Weyburn where there is a Coop gas bar and restaurant, the call went out last night to bring in cultivators to create a fire break.
Meanwhile, Environment Canada has issued a wind warning for Estevan, Weyburn, Radville, Milestone, Carlyle, Oxbow, Carnduff, Benfait, Stoughton and surrounding areas. The wind is expected to strengthen throughout the day gusting to 90 kilometres an hour by lunchtime and diminishing in early evening.
Social media is also indicating there was a grass fire north of Macoun which is 60 kilometres southeast of Weyburn.
And Yellow Grass Fire-Rescue posted on their social media that they received a mutual aid call from the Weyburn Fire Department Wednesday to deal with a large grass fire south of McTaggart. McTaggart is approximately 15 kilometres northwest of Weyburn.
The Yellow Grass Fire-Rescue says the wildfire was fanned by strong winds affecting a large area of land and multiple farmyards. As well, one of their members sustained injuries in fighting the grass fire.
