The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations is drawing attention to an alleged attack by guards at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary. A woman from the Thunderchild First Nation contacted the FSIN about her son, Kihiw Fourstar. Darla Fourstar says her son told her guards came into his cell and attacked him while he was handcuffed and on November 9th, he was taken to the medical unit with injuries.
Justice and Safety Commission Chair and FSIN Second Vice-Chief, Dutch Lerat, says an RCMP investigation has begun at the request of the executive leadership of the penitentiary and the guards have been suspended. Kihiw Fourstar was then transported to Stoney Mountain Institution for his safety. Lerat urges the public not to dismiss this as a justified assault. He says, “It happened off-camera with calculated rage.”
He adds that Kihiw Fourstar has mental health challenges and was denied his medications. His mother Darla explained that Kihiw has been on these medications since he was a child, and he needs them. The Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations is calling on the RCMP to conduct a thorough investigation on Correctional Services Canada and deal with inappropriate conduct.
