As of May 1st, Shercom Industries in Saskatoon no longer has a contract with Tire Stewardship Saskatchewan so can no longer accept tires from this province, and now the Premier is getting involved. The tire recycling business had to shut down its tire processing operations. TSS operates under a Ministry of Environment approved Product Stewardship Program. Shercom is still manufacturing its products made from tires, but can no longer accept tires from Saskatchewan. Crumb Rubber Manufacturers based out of California is setting up a facility in Moose Jaw to collect 40 to 100 per cent of Saskatchewan’s tires.
A note from Executive Council says Premier Scott Moe has asked Cam Swan, a former Deputy Minister to the Premier and former Deputy Minister of the Environment, to engage with the Ministry and TSS to review procurement practices and assess future needs of the tire recycling and processing, and to provide recommendations to the Minister. In the meantime, the province has asked TSS to pause its current Request For Proposals for a Saskatoon-area processor. The review is expected to be done by later this summer.
