The Saskatoon Police Service Economic Crime Section has arrested and charged a known affiliate of Russian organized crime for fraud- and identity-related offences.
On March 10 this year, the Saskatoon Police Service says they became aware of a man wanted on warrants and suspected of fraud by several authorities in Canada and the United States who was believed to living in Saskatoon under one of many assumed identities.
Their Investigation led officers to an address in the 400 block of Pendygrasse Road and on May 14 the suspect was arrested without incident.
A subsequent search warrant executed at the address in Saskatoon’s Fairhaven neighbourhood resulted in the seizure of multiple false and forged documents.
Police say the 48-year-old Georgian national is charged with procurement of false identity documents, possession of credit cards obtained by the commission of an offence, possession of the proceeds of crime over $5000, possession of citizenship documents for a fraudulent purpose, fraud over $5000, and use of forged documents.
The Saskatoon Police Service says additional charges are expected as investigations continue in several jurisdictions.
Georgia is now considered independent of Russia but was part of the Soviet Union until 1991.
