An idea that came from a class of Grade 5 students and their teacher is almost over, but Treaties Recognition Week was proclaimed by the Government of Saskatchewan.
It ran from this past Sunday and ends Saturday. After attending a Treaty 4 flag raising at the Town of Lumsden, the Grade 5 class at Ecole Lumsden Elementary and their teacher, Justin Freitag (pictured), were inspired to develop their own collective initiative to honour the original spirit and intent of the Treaties. The province adopted and accepted Treaties Recognition Week after the Grade 5s went through a period of consultation, relationship building, discussions with classroom visitors, education and letter writing. Treaties Recognition Week honours the importance of Treaties and promotes educational opportunities surrounding Treaty rights and relationships.
