Some areas of Alberta that have been dealing with wildfire smoke are now contending with Noah’s Ark kind of rain and in some communities overland flooding.
Edson Mayor Kevin Zahara and the town’s CAO said during their own online video update Monday that some roads in the community have been closed and infrastructure is taxed. Edson as of 1 am this morning, according to Environment Canada, received 122.5 millimetres of rain which is almost five inches.
Hendrickson Creek, about 95 kilometres northwest of Hinton has recorded 174 millimetres or seven inches of rain. Meanwhile, photos of highways near Hinton show vehicles heavily bogged down in snow. The Weather Network says, “A significant low-pressure system is bringing high precipitation amounts to west-central Alberta. Most of the precipitation has been falling as rain, however, western areas have also seen significant accumulating snow.”
Snowfall warnings, which were first issued on Sunday, remain in place over higher elevations, including Jasper National Park where between 20 to 40 centimetres of snow is forecast to fall.
The Alberta capital has also experienced a deluge of rain with the Edmonton area recording 57 to 76 millimetres since the low-pressure system moved in.
