Saskatchewan’s official opposition is calling on the provincial and federal governments to listen to the concerns of livestock producers and deliver drought relief.
The renewed calls for funding come as the Saskatchewan Cattleman’s Association released their report on the drought-town-hall-meetings.
A letter has been sent from SCA Chair Keith Day to Saskatchewan’s Minister of Agriculture. Some of the concerns outlined were culled from producer response at the meetings and indicate the Agri-Stability program is too slow to react and payments are untimely. It also suggests Agri-Recovery needs a mechanism that triggers a response quickly because when the program is late to respond to conditions, many producers have already made decisions to reduce animal numbers or disperse the herd entirely.
The Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association has also called on the government for more drought-relief measures. The Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities called the situation devastating after numerous RMs declared states of emergency due to drought.
