A forest fire near Golden, British Columbia was brought under control by first responders. Constable Mark Tataryn with the Golden RCMP BC Highway Patrol was on Highway 1 when he noticed a brush fire.
A news release from the BC RCMP says the fire was about 20 metres wide and heading east and was about to engulf some large trees. The Constable used multiple fire extinguishers from his police vehicle and then from the vehicles of fellow RCMP officers who responded and other motorists who stopped to help. Then, a Kootenay Pumping Truck was able help out. With the use of the pump and water lines, the group was able to slow the fire to a manageable size until the Golden Fire Department arrived and took over from there, with the assistance of the Nicholson Fire Department, and BC Wildfire Services that attended via helicopter. Other agencies that assisted on scene were EMCON and BC Hydro, who provided vital support.
Corporal Lucas Sovio with the Golden-Field RCMP sends out a special thank you to all the local residents, passersby and first responders who helped. It’s believed the fire started when a tree fell onto powerlines.
