Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has received hundreds of messages regarding the transfer of serial killer Paul Bernardo from a maximum to a medium security prison.
Bernardo is serving an indeterminate life sentence for the kidnapping, sexual assault and murder of two Ontario schoolgirls in the 1990s and the manslaughter death of his then-wife’s 15-year-old sister. His crimes got himself the nickname ‘The Schoolgirl Killer’.
The move was made in late May when Bernardo was transferred from the Millhaven Institution in southern Ontario, to La Macaza Institution about 190 kilometres northwest of Montreal. His new facility offers treatment for sex offenders. People wrote to the government, insisting that the government intervenes, saying how vividly they remembered the violent details of Bernardo’s case The government and then-public safety minister Marco Mendicino replied by stating there is nothing they could do because the Correctional Service of Canada is an independent agency.
