HUSKIES FOOTBALL RECAP:
Friday night was played under the lights at Griffiths Stadium when the Huskies returned home following a quick road trip last week to Calgary. The Dinos were an easier match compared to Friday night, with the undefeated UBC Thunderbirds rolling into town, and they rolled into town. UBC grabbed the early lead on their first drive of the game and wouldn’t be answered until late in the first thanks to Daniel Perry getting his first of two touchdowns on the night. Perry would get another before the half resulting in the Huskies leading 17-14 heading into halftime.
The third quarter saw the most action, especially towards the end. Huskie kicker David Solie would kick in two more field goals extending Saskatchewan’s lead and would be answered by a short 3-yard rush from UBC keeping them within reach but still down 23-21.
After the Thunderbird major, Ryker Frank would march a kick return down the field 105 yards giving the Dogs another comfortable lead, but not for long. The Thunderbirds would run back a punt return 62-yards to end the third quarter once again pulling to within two of the Huskies. UBC would add an early field goal in the fourth quarter to lead 31-30 but David Solie would also kick a field goal followed by a rouge point giving Saskatchewan a 34-31 lead and victory heading into their bye week while handing UBC their first loss on the season.

HUSKIES WOMEN’S SOCCER RECAP:
Women’s Soccer put another successful weekend, grabbing a 1-0 victory other Lethbridge on Friday and would draw against Calgary 0-0 Sunday afternoon with both games played at Griffiths Stadium.
Even though the score was 1-0 for the Huskies on Friday, the game wasn’t as close as the score depicts it. The Huskies registered 22 total shots with 13 on goal while Lethbridge only registered 2 shots which were both on net and goalie Nadia Kalyar stopping both. Pronghorns goalie Birdie Harding turned aside 12 of 13 shots with the only shot getting by her coming from Jade Houmphanh just before the half and would be the only goal of the game.
Sunday afternoon was a bit of a different story as Calgary is more on the level of Saskatchewan, and the game stats would prove it otherwise. Not only was it a 0-0 draw, but both teams registered 8 shots with 4 being on net. Jade Houmphanh and Alyssa D’Agnone lead the way offensively for the Huskies, each registering 2 shots and 1 on net. Kalin Roberts stopped 2 shots but would leave shortly after the half with an injury. Nadia Kalyar filled in until the end stopping 2 shots as well.

HUSKIES MEN’S SOCCER RECAP:
Men’s Soccer had themselves another tough weekend, this time on the road in Calgary taking on Mount Royal Friday dropping that game 2-0 and the Dinos on Sunday, losing 3-0.
The Huskies came into this match with only 1 victory while Mount Royal had 8 and picked up their ninth after a dominant performance winning 2-0. The Huskies only recorded 4 shots with 1 on net compared to Mount Royal’s 14 shots and 8 on net. Goalie Jaron Slopinski was in net for the Huskies turning aside 6 of the 8 shots he faced.
Although Sunday wasn’t the result the Huskies wanted, they had way more opportunities than Friday, registering 11 shots with 8 on net compared to Calgary’s 13 shots, but only 3 would find their not just on net but in the back of the net. Diego Reveco led the way for Saskatchewan, getting 5 shots with 3 on net. Tough afternoon for goalie Jaron Slopinski as he faced 3 shots on net, but couldn’t stop any resulting in a Dinos 3-0 win.
Next weekend was originally scheduled as a bye week for the Huskies but Saturday afternoon will be a rescheduled game against the Dinos. The game was postponed back on September 1 due to poor air quality in Saskatoon.

Men’s Hockey had the rare Thursday-Friday matchups in Manitoba to open up their 2023-2024 season with high expectations once again. They lived up to those expectations sweeping the Bisons with a dominant 6-1 win Thursday night and a 3-2 victory Friday afternoon.
The Huskies had 47 shots Thursday night in their 6-1 win, starting with Josh Pillar getting the first goal of the season. Carter Stebbings would find the back of the net twice, once in the first and once in the second period. Goalie Jordan Kooy turned aside 24 of 25 saves for a very solid performance in his first game.

HUSKIES WOMEN’S HOCKEY RECAP:
The Women’s Hockey began the long road to Nationals over the weekend with a very convincing weekend sweep of the Manitoba Bisons, with both games having dominant second period performances in their 4-2 victory Friday and 4-0 win on Saturday.
Kate Ball was the first Huskie to find the back of the net Friday net finding a rebound early in the first of a Sophie Lalor shot. The Bisons would answer shortly after that, but Lalor would score on a 5-on-3 power play early in the second period. The second half of the power play with Kelsey Hall getting the deflection in front. Sophie Lalor would get her second of the period at the halfway mark to increase the lead to 4-1. Manitoba would respond early in the third but wasn’t enough to spark a comeback with the Dogs winning 4-2 and Camryn Drever stopping 21 of 23 shots.
Saturday evening was almost the same story as Friday night. A scoreless first period left the game open in the second period, but the Huskies would have another dominant second period to lead them to victory. Jayde Cadieux grabbed her first career goal halfway into the second followed by Kate Ball getting her second of the season with a beautiful one-handed assist from Taylor Wilkinson. The two would trade spots with Wilkinson getting her first assisted from Ball. Sophie Lalor would get her second of the season late in the third period to secure the win for the Huskies 4-0, and a 2-and-0 start on the season. Camyrn Drever had another solid performance in net, recording the shutout stopping all 24 shots.
