Today is Louis Riel Day, which is held on November 16th across the Metis homeland. It’s the anniversary of his execution in 1885.
The City of Saskatoon is recognizing the day and there are a few events happening in the city. The first was last night at the Remai when Louis Riel and Metis veterans were honoured and today there is a gathering in Friendship Park beside the Gabiel Dumont Statue at 11 a.m. The statue is located at the base of the Broadway Bridge.
The City says Louis Riel Day is an opportunity to reflect on our shared history and understand the important role the Metis community has played – and continues to play – in both our city and our country.
