Coming off a loss last night in a tight contest between the top team in Canada West, the University of Saskatchewan Women’s Huskies were looking to rebound with another solid performance, but hoping this time to pick up a victory and split the weekend series. The Huskies grabbed the lead in the second, followed by a late game-tying goal that would result in a shootout where Sophie Lalor fired home the shootout winner to win the game 2-1.
**********
It was a very entertaining first period, with both teams getting great looks at even-strength, but the majority of the first period was a special teams battle with both penalty kills going perfect in the first period.
The Huskies started off the second period on the power play and in the dying seconds Isabella Pozzi fired home a one-timer past the blocked of Elise Hugens. The Huskies continued to apply the pressure, and thought to have had a 2-0 lead, but the goal was disallowed resulting in a solid pushback by the Thunderbirds. Saskatchewan made it out of the second period with a 1-0 lead and would take that lead into the final five minutes of the third period, but Thunderbirds captain Rylind MacKinnon found the back of the net on the power play to tie the game at one, forcing overtime.
Overtime would solve nothing, but in the shootout Sara Kendall would find the net first, followed by Sophie Lalor with the eventual game winner, giving the Huskies a 2-1 victory and splitting the weekend series going into a bye-week before going on the road to Mount Royal before the Christmas break.
