Question Period was heated at the Saskatchewan Legislature with the Official Opposition bringing up the Sask Party MLA from Cutknife-Turtleford who has been charged in a human trafficking investigation. Premier Scott Moe then suggested the protest that made its way into the proceedings was connected to the NDP.
On Monday, protestors outside the Legislature were calling for a cease fire between Hamas and Israel. They made their way into the building and began to shout their message to MLAs. The Speaker asked them to be seated and be quiet, but the group continued, so the Sask Party MLAs walked out and later, so did the NDP.
When NDP Leader Carla Beck mentioned the Cutknife-Turtleford MLA and suggested that the government wasn’t doing enough to counteract domestic violence, the Premier answered that he made a very strong decision last week, when he cut the MLA from government caucus and he did it swiftly. He asked Beck if she would make a strong decision about Monday’s protest, saying, “We have seen now, Mr. Speaker, the NDP, which is a collection of extremist individuals, Mr. Speaker. So will the leader of the opposition actually look into extremist individuals in her party, Mr. Speaker, to ensure they had nothing to do with the unprecedented activity yesterday?” (Mon)
Beck responded that she understood the Premier was searching for a defence, but felt that remark was “beyond the pale”. And she said if it was a strong statement they are looking for “last month every Sask Party MLA on that side voted to ban sexual assault education in our kids’ schools.”
Meanwhile, A ceasefire agreement between the Hamas militant group and Israel has been confirmed by both parties, along with Washington and Qatar, which helped broker the deal. The agreement would also involve Israel releasing Palestinian prisoners and allowing more humanitarian aid into Gaza.
