A former federal NDP leader has died. Eighty-seven-year old Ed Broadbent was an MP for over 20 years and led the New Democratic Party from 1975 to 1989.
The Broadbent Institute, which explores social-democratic policy, says our country has lost a fierce champion for ordinary Canadians and describes him as a steadfast advocate for equal rights. On social media, NDP Leader Jagmeet called Broadbent a mentor and a friend – a titan of social democracy – who was connected in a deep way to the struggled of working-class Canadians. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Canada is better off because of Ed Broadbent’s selfless service and he leaves behind an incredible legacy.
