Teachers around the province are going on their third one-day strike today.
Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation President Samantha Becotte says today, the rotating full-day strike will only be taking place in certain school divisions: Horizon, Prairie South, Prince Albert Catholic, Saskatchewan Rivers, Light of Christ and Living Sky School Divisions, and Sakewew High School in North Battleford. There is no word on what day members of other school divisions will take their turn on the picket lines. Today’s strike will affect about 35,000 students and 3,000 teachers, who Becotte says are all eager to return to bargaining and get back to a regular school year.
She adds that the main issues the provincial government won’t negotiate on are class size and complexity. “Their short-term pilot projects, one-time funding announcements, and any potential increases that are announced in the budget, or even if this goes on longer, any election promises, are all attempted to sidestep the bargaining process, and avoid making long-term commitments that would see improvements in our schools and classes across the province,” she accuses.
