The fourth one-day strike, which is also the second rotating strike for Saskatchewan teachers is today (Wed) for Saskatoon’s school divisions, Prairie Spirit, Northern Lights and Creighton school divisions.
President of the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation, Samantha Becotte, understands this has a significant impact on students and their families, but she says that is not their goal. Teachers want to be in the classroom supporting their students.
One of the biggest sticking points is funding for class size and complexity to be included in the contract. The provincial government has previously stated this isn’t the place for that kind of funding. Becotte states that it’s in the contract because teachers, school divisions and school boards want reliable funding annually, as opposed to one-time funding for various projects which means not being able to plan for hiring the staff needed.
