There were to be two Neighbourhood Information Sessions next Tuesday and Thursday about the proposed Emergency Residential Shelter on Central Avenue, but they have been postponed, as have reports that were planned for presentation at the February 28th meetings of City Council. The City and the provincial government are working collaboratively on the final details for the 30-space emergency shelter to be located at the former Fire Station.
In a news release, the City says much progress has been made on developing an integrated plan, but more time is needed to ensure the best outcomes for the entire community and to meet the expectations of Sutherland residents, businesses and workplaces.
This will be an enhanced emergency shelter, which means clients have access 24 hours a day, and will be provided three meals per day, case planning and access to wrap-around supports to address wellness and cultural needs, as well as assistance in connecting to services such as financial supports and transitioning to appropriate housing. The public information sessions for the Central Avenue shelter will be rescheduled within the next month.
The location of the second temporary 30-space shelter hasn’t been determined yet. There are also plans for a 15-bed emergency shelter at 1701 Idylwyld Drive North, a former liquor store, for those with severe complex needs.
