The Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park and Zoo is now officially the new home of five zebras. The zebras have been in Saskatoon Since July 13th last year. When they came into care of the Forestry Farm Park and Zoo, they were owned by the Government of Saskatchewan after Conservation officers seized them from a rural property the month prior. So the province anted up $100,000, which provided winter shelter including at least 750 square feet of additional space and was comprised of a 4 foot cement block pony wall, with a fabric topper.
Now that the legal proceedings have wrapped up after Nicholas Hazell was charged with several wildlife offences, including importing, possessing and holding the zebras captive without required licenses, ownership has been transferred to the Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park & Zoo effective March 31st. The Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park and Zoo says zebras don’t grow a winter coat, being native to Africa, and tolerate temperatures to -5 degrees Celsius. The forecast is showing double digit highs and spring appears to have truly arrived, so the zebras are expected to be spending more time outdoors exploring their habitat.
