One of two major food drives that take place at the Saskatoon Food Bank and learning Centre is underway for the month of May.
SFB Executive Director Laurie O’Connor says the food bank is seeing increased usage and will see even more as school food programs start to wrap up for the summer.
O’Connor says the food drive is titled ‘Don’t Let Your Neighbour Fall Through the Cracks.’
“It’s just a reminder, to a very supportive community, that we don’t want to let our friends and neighbours down, that we really do want to support them. that can translate to donating to the Food Bank and Learning Centre,” she explains. “I think we can often get caught up in our own lives and not understand that it could be someone very close to us that needs to use a foodbank. It isn’t always who we might have the picture of in our mind.”
O’Connor says the food bank is seeing increased usage, and resources are starting to get depleted following the last city-wide food drive that took place during the holidays.
“We’re looking upwards of 23,000 people using the food bank in a month, which equates to us preparing around 7500 to 8000 hampers in a month.”
She encourages the public to consider donating baby food and formula, cereal, whole grain pasta, sauce, and hearty soups and stews, as those are the food bank’s most wanted food items.
Donations can be dropped off at the food bank or in the bins located at most grocery stores around the city. Monetary donations are also welcome.
