The Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park & Zoo has a birth announcement. Lucy the ring-tailed lemur has given birth. Zoo Manager, Jeff Mitchell says they don’t know yet if it’s a boy or girl because they want the mom and the baby to bond. A name will be selected in the coming weeks.
Ring-tailed lemurs are native to southwestern Madagascar and are classified as endangered. Mitchell notes that lemurs are considered the most endangered mammal group in the world, and their populations are managed through Species Survival Plan Programs. Expert advisors work together to maximize genetic diversity.
The ring-tailed lemur family is in the Small Mammal House at the Zoo.
