The basic message for National Victims and Survivors of Crime Week is that there is help out there for you.
Executive Director of Family Service Saskatoon, Janine Baumann says, “Service providers and professionals work together to create a better experience for victims and survivors of crime by advocating for the, giving them information, and providing them with meaningful support.” She notes that Saskatchewan has the highest rate of police-reported incidents of intimate partner violence and the highest rate of family violence across Canada. The Saskatoon Police Service and Family Service Saskatoon held an official proclamation ceremony this morning (Wed) at police headquarters in honour of Victims and Survivors of Crime Week.
Through the Police Service, Victim Services deals with a wide range of incidents involving personal crimes such as assaults, sexual assault and domestic violence in the immediate aftermath of the event. Staff and volunteers also provide assistance in tragedies such as suicides and fatal accidents. Family Service Saskatoon provides programs, services and counselling support to those who are victims of violence.
Incoming Chief Cam McBride states, “The Saskatoon Police Service recognizes how important supports are for victims and survivors of crime in our community. Collaborations like the one we have with Family Service Saskatoon and other community partners is integral to this work; this extends to the members and professional Victim Services staff of the SPS who strive to provide care and needed supports each day.” For more information about the Victims Fund, click here.
