The Saskatoon Berries responded to opposition scoring with some unique offensive innings on the way to out-scoring the Medicine Hat Mavericks 14-8 Wednesday night in front of 1,572 “Wiener Wednesday” fans at Cairns Field.
After the visitors opened the scoring with two runs in the third inning off lefty Saskatoon pitcher E-J Miramontes, in his Berries debut, the home team scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on four infield singles, followed by two walks and a hit batsmen – all with the bases loaded. Then, after Medicine Hat tied the score at 6-6 in the top of the fifth inning, the Berries came back in the bottom half of the fifth frame with four runs without the benefit of a base hit as Mavericks’ pitching walked five Saskatoon batters, hit two others and the Medicine Hat defence committed two errors. From there, Berries’ pitchers Kolt Davis and Gage Driskell held the Mavericks to just two runs over the final four innings to give Saskatoon their third straight win and improve their W-C-B-L record to 6-8. Medicine Hat dropped to 8-5. The same teams meet Thursday night at 7 at Cairns Field. Following is the official game information and linescore from the W-C-B-L website plus Les Lazaruk’s post-game interviews with head coach Joe Carnahan, Miramontes and left fielder McGwire Turner…..
