If re-elected the Saskatchewan Party says its government will extend the carbon tax exemption on home heating for another year.
Last fall after the Liberal government announced a tax exemption on home heating oil, which primarily benefits Atlantic Canada, the Saskatchewan government announced it would exempt residential natural gas and electricity used for home heating. That exemption for natural gas is due to expire at the end of this December and the electricity used for home heating came to a close at the end of April. The Saskatchewan Party says it would extend the exemption on natural gas for another year until the end of 2025 and the electricity exemption would be in place from November 1st to April 30th next year.
The Saskatchewan Party estimates the natural gas exemption will save the average household about $400 this year and they say it will save the average household $480 next year if the federal government goes ahead with its next planned carbon tax increase on April 1, 2025.
Meanwhile Saskatchewan residents are among those getting carbon pricing rebates today. The quarterly rebate will go to those who filed their income tax while living in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and all four Atlantic provinces.
