They’ve won 149 regular-season games since September of 2021, so the Saskatoon Blades have learned how to win close games. They did so again Saturday night, slipping past the Tri-City Americans 2-1 before 4,783 fans on “Girls Rock Night” at SaskTel Centre.
Willie James broke up a goaltenders’ dual between Evan Gardner (pictured) of the Bridge City Bunch and Lukas Matecha of the Ams, stripping a Tri-City defenceman of the puck in front of the Americans’ net before whirling and firing a shot past Matecha with 5:11 remaining in the third period. The goal broke a 1-1 tie and was the 18-year-old Calgary product’s first goal in 13 games. It was the eighth straight game involving the Blue and Gold that was decided by one goal. Overall, the Blades are 9-4-2 in games decided by one goal or two goals with an empty net tally included. Saskatoon has only played 20 games, meaning three-quarters of their games so far this season have been nail-biters. Gardner made 33 saves with Jake Gudelj’s second period goal being the only blemish on his night. Cooper Williams opened the scoring for the Bridge City Bunch in the first period as Matecha made 30 saves. The victory was the sixth straight at home for the Blue and Gold and their sixth consecutive head-to-head success over the Ams, now 0-2-0 on their six-game East Division road trip and 13-5-1 overall. The Blades improved to 13-5-2 for the season and moved back into sole possession of first place in the East Division and Eastern Conference ahead of Swift Current. Saskatoon’s next action is Tuesday when they welcome the Medicine Hat Tigers to SaskTel Centre at 7 o’clock.
