The City of Saskatoon is going to reveal this afternoon, when the City Council agenda is posted, exactly what the plan is for warming shelters in Saskatoon. But in the meantime, The Mustard Seed, which is going to be running the shelter on Pacific Avenue in the old STC building, is also going to be taking over property management and supportive housing services at the Lighthouse.
On their website they say the site is different than others operating in the area in that The Mustard Seed Housing Saskatoon will provide 60 supportive housing units that will be a permanent home for people exiting chronic homelessness. They emphasize it is not a shelter because residents sign a lease, pay rent and are provided 24/7 access to onsite wellness and social supports such as healthcare, meals, addiction support, inclusive Indigenous and multi-cultural programming, and recreation. This site does not offer drop-in services. They suggest that will mean that there will be a significant reduction in loitering outside the building.
They will be providing supportive housing services starting December 1st and, on their website, indicate that they are already above capacity and will not be accepting new applications to the building.
Meanwhile in October The Mustard Seed was chosen by the Government of Saskatchewan to operate the new homeless shelter in the old STC building however no date has yet been set for when that facility will become operational, only that it will be in the winter 2024-25. That facility will be first come, first served and will accommodate 30 to 40 people. The shelter is intended to operate for 18 months, and they will continue to search for a more permanent location.
