The Saskatchewan RCMP has confirmed that two men and two women were killed in a quadruple homicide on Carry the Kettle Nakoda Nation on Tuesday. Around 11:15 am, the File Hills First Nations Police Service was alerted about a sudden death at a home on the Nakoda Nation and when they arrived, four people were found dead inside the home.
Major Crimes investigators remain on the scene, and residents will continue to notice an increased police presence in relation to the investigation. A release from the RCMP says investigators believe the house was targeted. The victims are still being identified.
Keagan Panipekeesick of Regina was arrested at a home on Mathieu Crescent shortly after 1 Wednesday morning following a report of a man pointing a firearm on Zagime Anishinabek on Tuesday afternoon. It’s not far from Carry the Kettle Nakoda Nation. Inspector Ashley St. Germaine, Senior Investigative Officer with Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes says it’s not known if the two incidents are connected. However, police don’t believe there is an increased danger right now on the Carry the Kettle Nakota Nation. “At this point in time, we don’t have information to confirm that they are still at large. The investigation is still ongoing, and we don’t have any reason to believe there is a danger to the public at this point, and we do believe it was a targeted residence.” When asked why a dangerous person alert wasn’t issued, St. Germaine explained that it didn’t fit their criteria. “Based on how the incident on Zagime evolved on Tuesday, they didn’t issue a dangerous person alert.”
She adds that the Coroners Service is working to identify the deceased, and police are working with the families of those who have been identified to give them support.
