The Saskatoon Police Service is launching a Warrant Enforcement Unit as a one-year pilot project. The pilot was presented as part of the 2024 Business Plan Year-End Report.
Its goal is to enhance community safety by tackling a significant number of outstanding warrants in Saskatoon by locating and apprehending those with active warrants.
The unit will be made up of one sergeant and four constables and will focus on executing arrest warrants for individuals who have failed to appear in court or have active criminal charges.
Currently, there are approximately 6,400 outstanding Criminal Code warrants in Saskatoon, with 5,000 of those having been issued since January 2023.
In a news release, Tony Landry, Inspector in charge of Patrol Support says, “A dedicated team focused on warrant enforcement will allow us to prioritize arresting wanted individuals who pose the greatest risk to public safety while also alleviating pressures faced by frontline patrol officers.”
