The City’s committee on transportation has passed an amendment to the cycling bylaw allowing cyclists the option to ride on streets where bike lanes are available.
The committee also backed another admendment to the bylaw allowing cyclists who are 14 and younger to ride on sidewalks.
During the meeting, Councillor Bev Dubois asked Jay Magus, Director of Transportation if it would be ideal to also include seniors under the 14 and younger category.
Magus said after looking at what other municipalities have done with their cycling bylaws, his team feels comfortable with not including seniors under the same umbrella as children after a “thorough” look into the matter.
Councillor Zach Jefferies asked about enforcement of the bylaw changes. Magus replied saying police and community support officers will be in charge of addressing issues.
The matter will now make its way to City Council for the final stamp of approval.
