As you drive through the many areas of roadwork in Saskatoon, you may see some new additions to improve worker safety.
Terry Schmidt, General Manager of Transportation & Construction, says the City now has a truck with a modified bed so that workers can safely stand on the back and put pylons on the road.
This is for high traffic roads where normally workers would be walking and putting the pylons down with no physical barrier between the traffic and themselves.
A second truck has been added with a crash cushion, which acts as a physical barrier for moving work zones.
Schmidt says workers who are right there alongside the traffic see distracted driving, speeding and impaired driving every day and he reminds drivers that rushing to get somewhere could cost a life.
There have been some near misses and accidents where equipment was hit.
However, Schmidt says the message is sinking in for some drivers.
Saskatoon Police issued 29% fewer speeding tickets in work zones last year compared to 2017.
