As more and more people in Canada and the U.S. get vaccinated for COVID-19, questions continue being raised about opening the border.
Chief Pubic Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam says the current stance is fully vaccinated travellers have the right of entry.
She points out, there is a reduction of some of the border measures including the full quarantine. Tam says they do continue to advise people to keep up some of the personal protective measures.
The border has been closed since March of last year.
COVID numbers are declining across the country. Tam says total active and daily case numbers are 95% fewer than the peak of the 3rd wave of the pandemic, with fewer than 500 new cases daily.
She also says there have been reductions in severe illness numbers. Still, Tam says we haven’t crossed the finish line yet. She is encouraging people who haven’t done so, to get vaccinated. She says we need to keep the momentum going to reach the 80% mark of Canadians being vaccinated.
