City administration is hoping to amend the Traffic Safety Act to make things safer for bicyclists and pedestrians in Saskatoon.
Administration is looking to get council approval to lobby SGI to amend the act for three specific areas. Requiring drivers to yield to pedestrians that are indicating an intention to cross the street at legal crossings. Currently the traffic act doesn’t require drivers to stop for pedestrians waiting to cross, until they have actually stepped onto the road.
Permitting cyclists to user their right arm to indicate a right turn, and permitting cyclists to ride their bicycle when a crossride is provided at legal crossings. Cyclists are currently required to use their left arm to indicate a right turn, it is also currently required that cyclists dismount their bike at an intersection or midblock crossing, when using a shared pathway.
If approved city administration would report back to city council regarding any discussions with SGI.
