SaskPower, the Flying Dust First Nation and Genalta Power have signed a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement for a 15 megawatt flare gas-to-power facility near Coleville, which is about 33 kilometres north of Kindersley. Energy and Resources Minister Bronwyn Eyre says this project will create about 50 jobs during construction and 20 into operation.

It will be the largest flare gas-to-power operation in the province, generating power for around 9,000 Saskatchewan homes and reducing emissions. It’s a methane capture and commercialization project, which Eyre says will help the province achieve its goals of reducing methane-based gas emissions by 40 to 45 per cent by 2025, under the Methane Action Plan. The project will use flare gas that would otherwise be emitted into the atmosphere to create low-carbon baseload electricity.

The Power Purchase Agreement was developed through an ongoing partnership between SaskPower and the First Nations Power Authority, which is a not-for-profit organization that works to include Indigenous people in the power sector and achieve sustainable economic development and community benefits.
