A network of organizations called the STOPS to Violence Network says Colin Thatcher’s presence in the Legislature for the throne speech certainly highlights the scope and seriousness of the issue of interpersonal violence in Saskatchewan. Executive Director Tracy Knutson points out that his visit was also during Saskatchewan Violence Prevention Week, which brings awareness on the issue of interpersonal violence and abuse and how to recognize it.
She believes the key issue in this case is that there is a conditioned bias toward normalizing a culture of violence in this province. “As we continue to face the increasing realities of interpersonal violence and abuse, there is a growing need for each person to take responsibility and action, which is what this year’s theme ‘It Starts With You’ is all about. Knutson calls on all of us to understand how we contribute to the conditions that perpetuate violence in Saskatchewan and the STOPS to Violence Network asks us to make choices about how we support those around us.
