It probably goes without saying that travel on the highway isn’t the best idea today and the Highway Hotline backs it up.
Saskatchewan RCMP are asking Saskatchewan residents to avoid unnecessary travel.
They say officers across the province are reporting that weather is impacting road conditions due to snow and gusting winds. Roads may be slippery/icy and snow-covered in some areas with reduced visibility.
RCMP also suggest that if things look clear at your planned time of departure, make sure you still check the forecast and Highway Hotline as weather and road conditions can change very quickly. And if you feel you absolutely must travel, ensure you have plenty of gas, a fully charged cell phone, food, water and extra warm clothing packed.
The City of Saskatoon has declared this a snow event which means contractors are assisting City crews with clean up. There are 22 graders, twelve sanders, four plows and two sidewalk plows moving around the city.
Residents can report heavily drifted locations to the Customer Care Centre at 306-975-2476.
The Saskatoon Police Service is advising motorists of severe icy road conditions due to the winter storm overnight. Blowing snow combined with freezing temperatures and high winds have made for poor driving conditions throughout the city and area with reduced visibility. In areas where the snow has cleared off, the road surface, for the most part, is glare ice. Drivers are reminded to slow down and plan extra time to get where you are going.
Heavy snow and blowing snow will continue to move out of east-central Saskatchewan. Strong northwesterly winds along with falling snow is causing widespread reduced visibilities this morning. An additional 5-10 cm of snow is expected to fall today. Conditions are expected to improve this evening. Those areas under a blowing snow advisory also have a wind warning with winds up to 90 kilometres an hour expected.
